How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Grand Rapids

May 20, 20266 min readBy Salt & Light Roofing

Choosing a roofing contractor in Grand Rapids is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a homeowner. A roof replacement is a significant investment — and the contractor you choose determines whether that investment lasts 30 years or starts leaking in three. Here is what we tell our neighbors across West Michigan to look for before they sign anything.

1. Verify the Michigan license

Michigan requires residential roofers to hold an active Maintenance & Alteration (M&A) Contractor license. You can look up any license number on the State of Michigan LARA website. Salt & Light Roofing and Exteriors, LLC holds Michigan M&A License #272600027. If a contractor can't or won't share their license number, that's an immediate red flag.

2. Confirm insurance — both liability and workers' comp

Ask for a current Certificate of Insurance (COI) showing general liability AND workers' compensation. Without workers' comp, if a roofer is injured on your property, you can be held liable. A reputable Grand Rapids roofing contractor will have the COI emailed to you directly from their insurance carrier within minutes.

3. Ask about manufacturer certifications

Certified installers (GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum, CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster) can offer extended manufacturer warranties that standard installers cannot. These warranties matter when something goes wrong years down the line.

4. Get the scope in writing

Your estimate should specify shingle brand and line, underlayment, ice & water shield coverage, drip edge, ventilation, and disposal. 'Standard install' is not a scope. Vague estimates are how homeowners get surprised with change orders.

5. Beware of storm-chasers

After a West Michigan hailstorm, out-of-state crews flood neighborhoods knocking on doors. They're often gone before any warranty issue can be addressed. Hire local. Hire someone you can drive to.
