5 Signs of Hail Damage on a West Michigan Roof

May 5, 20265 min readBy Salt & Light Roofing

Spring and summer storms roll across West Michigan every year, and hail damage often goes unnoticed from the ground. By the time leaks appear inside the home, the insurance claim window may already have closed. Here are five signs to look for after a hailstorm in Grand Rapids, Hudsonville, or anywhere across Kent and Ottawa counties.

1. Dents on metal vents, flashing, or gutters

If the soft metal on your roof is dented, the shingles almost certainly took impact too. This is the easiest check to do from the ground.

2. Bruised or 'soft' shingles

Hail strikes knock granules loose and bruise the asphalt mat underneath. Run a hand across the shingle — bruises feel soft, like an apple. From above, they look like dark, circular spots.

3. Granules in the gutters or downspouts

A fresh layer of granules at the bottom of your downspout after a storm is one of the clearest signs of hail or wind damage.

4. Cracked or split shingles

Large hail can fracture shingles outright. Cracks expose the mat and dramatically shorten the life of your roof.

5. Damaged skylights, siding, or AC fins

If your siding is dimpled or the AC condenser fins are bent, the roof almost certainly took comparable impact.

Document everything within 12 months

Most Michigan homeowner policies require hail claims to be filed within 12 months of the storm. Get a free inspection from a licensed local contractor before your window closes. Call Salt & Light Roofing at 616-379-9587.
